Kakadu Highlights in a Couple of Days

23/01/2022

You will need to buy a visitor's pass to Kakadu.

There are two ways into Kakadu. The Northern and Southern roads. The North road is the Arnhem Highway. The Southern road is the Kakadu Highway. These two roads create a triangle loop and could be used as such.

I would suggest heading in via the Arnhem Highway. This road goes past jumping croc tours which are a fun stop off, as well as the historical Humpty Doo Hotel. The North end of the park is home to Jabiru which is the township of Kakadu. There are a few caravan parks and motels in Jabiru as well as a fuel station and supermarket. I usually stay at Anbinik kakadu resort.

While in the North end of the park you have the largest indigenous rock art sight approx. 40mins away at Ubirr. Ubirr is best at sunset. I would allow at least an hour or so at Ubirr to experience the galleries and walk to the top of the monolith.

Cahills crossing is very close to Ubirr and is a great place to see crocs in their natural setting however don't get to close to the water's edge!

While in the North end of Kakadu you can also experience the Bowali visitor's centre where you can get your park access, find gifts and get a coffee. You can walk to the Bowali centre from the Jabiru supermarket (30mins) or drive there.

As you head south from Jabiru approx. 30mins away you will come to a turn off for Nourlangie rock lookout, try and do this in the morning as the walk can be quite full on during the day. While at nourlangie rock lookout also go to "Little nourlangie" (nawurlandja) if you do both walks you should have spent the better part of your morning in this area. Head back to Jabiru and have lunch.

Heading south you will see the turn to Cooinda Lodge. They do a great lunch! Book to do the Yellow waters cruise and try to book for a morning cruise. This is an amazing wildlife adventure.

Next to Cooinda Lodge is the Warradjan cultural centre, this place is full of indigenous culture and another great way to envelop yourself with the Aboriginal culture of the top end. There is a gift shop also.

From the southern end you have access to Jim Jim falls and also Gunlom falls. Both of these tracks are four wheel drive only so make sure you are prepared.

This is a basic guide to a few days in Kakadu and will take you to some spectacular spots. Obviously be croc wise and stay well away from waters, stay well hydrated and keep a first aid kit handy.
